God Is Change: Mythic Memory, Emergent Futures and the Sacred Art of Being Transformed

“Worlds are cracking open. It's time to make new gods.” -Bayo Akomolafe

"Traditions have always traveled and changed shape, just as the land itself changes constantly. It’s a story of constant mutation, assimilation, and re-expression." -Josh Schrei

Join us for this timely & enlivening conversation God Is Change: Mythic Memory, Emergent Futures and the Sacred Art of Being Transformed with philosopher & luminary Bayo Akomolafe (founder of the Emergence Network) and celebrated mythteller & teacher Josh Schrei (host of the The Emerald Podcast).

We are living in a period of profound rupture, unraveling and possibility. The stories we have inherited about the Sacred and our place in the world are no longer holding, and the ground beneath us—ecologically, socially, and spiritually—is rapidly shifting.

Octavia Butler proclaims in her beloved and prophetic book Parable of the Sower:, “All that you touch, you Change. All that you Change, changes you. The only lasting truth is Change. God Is Change.”

This conversation, which starts a yearlong journey of Rooting in the Sacred, invites us to pause inside of Octavia’s “God Is Change” philosophy and ask what it means for our lives today. In a radically changing religious landscape where the old gods are dying and the new gods are being born, how do we root ourselves spiritually, not by clinging to fixed forms or false certainty, but by embracing what is ancient and emerging? What does our relationship with the sacred become when it is not about the right answers or worldview, and more about being in relationship—with one another, the living world, and the great mystery that animates it all?

Bringing together two of the most distinct and transformative voices of our time - Bayo Akomolafe and Josh Schrei - we will uncover how we can reawaken our spiritual imagination, composting inherited images of God and the sacred, and engaging our ancestral memory and modern wisdom with the spirit of reverence, care and curiosity. Sparked by their provocative inquiries and illuminating insight, we will explore the edges of today’s emerging spirituality: How do we practice, embody and give life to a liberating spiritual future? What are the cracks we must traverse individually and collectively, and what is the path of spiritual cultural adaptation versus appropriation? How can being lost and listening—a deep, humble, embodied listening—be one of the most essential sacred practices of our time?

Rooting in the Sacred is an invitation into our collective becoming; it is a path of contemporary spiritual formation; an awakening to living fully with presence, groundedness, and reverence in our everyday lives. At a time when our world is calling for spiritually-grounded changemakers and leaders, this is an opportunity to gather in community and connect with the sacred as a creative force within us and around us.

“This God is the God of the cracks...it's a pantheon, and it has no name yet, but it will come through us." -Bayo Akomolafe
